C...A good article with some interesting statements. Christgau's description of the desperately passionate Dead freaks is both amusing & true.

It's notable that the Dead refused to play Madison Square Garden, preferring to play smaller places. (So, in Dec '71, they played in the Felt Forum rather than MSG.) That would change by '79, as they outgrew small theaters!

He accurately describes the first set (unfortunately, not the second) and how different many of the new songs would have sounded to old fans. (All the same, there wouldn't be THAT many new songs for those who'd seen them in December. But people could see differences in the band's performances over the months that don't jump out so readily on tape.)

He also mentions how old-timers distrust the newer fans the band had picked up in '71, drawn by the catchy new songs. (Even Blair Jackson, who first saw them in 1970, was alarmed by the "rock 'n' roll yahoos" who started coming in '71 to hear the hits.) We'd see that again in the '80s!

Christgau also says that Godchaux had been almost inaudible at the Dec '71 Felt Forum shows - I've read that in other places, too. (Another review of that run also said the piano was weakly miked. Dan Healy went to one of the shows & strongly objected to the sound, leading to his re-joining the sound crew.)Light Into Asheshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06943335142002007213noreply@blogger.com
