The bit about Bobby being more out front seems intuitively like perhaps he hadn't seen them in over a year-ish...so that's my guess, he'd seen em but not without PigMr. Completelyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08915209342037285807noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5195590583641426943.post-47672026523752287062013-01-19T06:07:08.184-08:002013-01-19T06:07:08.184-08:00Just as an aside, Keith played several shows on pi...Just as an aside, Keith played several shows on piano with the New Riders on this tour - even after the Dead's tour had ended!
http://hooterollin.blogspot.com/2011/11/nrps-with-keith-and-donna-godchaux-1973.html

It's not known if he joined them in Boston - we know he played with the Riders at the shows before & after this one, but this article does not mention it.Light Into Asheshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06943335142002007213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5195590583641426943.post-13934027298642148202013-01-19T05:53:12.345-08:002013-01-19T05:53:12.345-08:00The Boston Garden must have had pretty poor sound ...The Boston Garden must have had pretty poor sound if the reviewer couldn't clearly hear the bass, piano, or the vocals!
This was the Dead's first concert at the Garden; usually in the '70s, they played the smaller Boston Music Hall.

The New Riders played a few shows with the Dead in early '73, including the last 3 of the Dead's spring tour.

About half of the second set (songwise) would've been new to listeners. It's hard to tell if or when the reviewer had seen them before, though he knows their albums. It's odd that he says Weir did more of the new songs - actually, all the new songs were Garcia's! As usual in early '73, most of Weir's contributions were country covers (which the reviewer seems to like).

Playing in the Band is singled out for praise. Though the show today is famed for the Here Comes Sunshine>space jam, note that the rockers at the end (Sugar Magnolia and Casey Jones) got the biggest audience reaction. This was typical at the time - the Dead seem to have been more popular as a good-time rock band than as a "jam" band.Light Into Asheshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06943335142002007213noreply@blogger.com
